Organic Ubtan is the traditional Indian alternative to baby soap — a gentle herbal powder of besan (gram flour), kasturi haldi, almond, rose and mild aromatics. Indian grandmothers have bathed babies this way for generations, and the reason is simple: it cleans without detergent.

No soap, no SLS/SLES, no parabens, no synthetic fragrance, no artificial colour.

Why Ubtan Instead of Baby Soap

  • No detergent — besan cleans through gentle absorption rather than stripping
  • Preserves the skin barrier — baby skin is thinner and loses moisture faster than adult skin
  • No fragrance — the most common trigger for infant skin reactions
  • Traditionally used to soften fine body hair over time
  • Supports even skin tone — the traditional reason for the haldi
  • Pairs with oil massage — the classic malish-then-ubtan routine

How to Use

The traditional routine:

  1. Massage the baby gently with warm coconut, sesame or almond oil.
  2. Mix 1–2 teaspoons of Organic Ubtan with milk, curd or plain water into a soft paste.
  3. Apply gently over the body, avoiding eyes, mouth and the nappy area.
  4. Massage very lightly in circular motions, then rinse with warm water.

Two to three times a week is plenty. Daily is unnecessary for a baby.

For newborns under 3 months, or if your baby has eczema or any diagnosed skin condition, check with your paediatrician first. Stop immediately if any redness or irritation appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is it suitable from?

Traditionally used from a few weeks old. For newborns, ask your paediatrician first.

Will the turmeric stain my baby’s skin?

No — we use kasturi haldi, the non-staining cosmetic variety.

Can adults use it?

Yes — it is simply a very gentle ubtan. For adults, our Sugandhi Ubtan is more aromatic.

Does it really reduce body hair?

It is traditionally used with that intention over long periods. Treat it as tradition rather than a guaranteed outcome.

How do I store it?

Sealed, cool and dry. Mix only what you need for each bath — never store wet paste.

Do you ship to the USA and UK?

Yes — worldwide from India including USA, UK, Canada, UAE, Australia and Singapore.
