There is no single best powder for hair fall. There is a best one for your particular cause — and the one-second test below decides which. Buying bhringraj when your problem is breakage, or any powder at all when your problem is low ferritin, is why people conclude herbal hair care does not work.
First: The Test That Decides Everything
Pick up a fallen hair and look at the end.
- A small white bulb → it came out at the root. This is hair fall. Cause is internal.
- No bulb, a ragged end → it snapped mid-length. This is breakage. Cause is external.
These need different products. Most people buy for the wrong one.
Choose By Cause
| Your situation | Buy this | Realistic result |
|---|---|---|
| Falling at the root, thinning density | Bhringraj | Less shedding at 6–8 weeks |
| Breaking mid-length, dry and brittle | Amla + hibiscus | Less breakage in 3–4 weeks |
| Rough, tangled, no slip | Hibiscus | Immediate, first wash |
| Itchy, flaking scalp | Neem + methi | Scalp calmer in 2–4 weeks |
| Premature greying | Amla + curry leaf, eaten as well | Slows new greying only |
| Harsh shampoo, want to switch | Hair wash powder | After a 2–3 week transition |
| Want one thing, not five | The 5-herb blend | Covers most of the above |
If You Only Buy One Thing
Buy the Amla Reetha Shikakai Hibiscus Bhringraj blend. It is the honest recommendation for most people: bhringraj for the root, amla for the shaft, hibiscus for conditioning, reetha and shikakai for cleansing — pre-mixed in sensible proportions, so you are not buying five packs and guessing ratios.
Buy single herbs instead when you have one specific problem and want to control the ratio.
How Much to Buy
A hair pack uses 3–5 tablespoons — far more than the 1 teaspoon of an internal supplement. Once a week, that is roughly 200 g a month for shoulder-length hair.
Hair takes 3–6 months to show a density change, because hair grows about 1 cm a month and nothing changes that. So a realistic first purchase is 500 g, not 100 g — a 100 g pack gives you three or four washes and no chance of seeing a result.

Before You Buy Anything: The Blood Test
We sell hair powders and this is still the highest-value thing in this article.
If your hair fall is sudden, heavy, or has run for months, get tested for:
- Ferritin — iron stores. It can be low while your haemoglobin reads normal, so "your haemoglobin is fine" does not rule this out. This is the commonest correctable cause in Indian women.
- TSH — thyroid, both under and over
- Vitamin D and B12
- PCOS, if your periods are irregular
If one of those is low, correcting it does more than any powder. A pack applied weekly cannot fix a deficiency. Read Hair Fall: What Actually Helps and Why Anemia Is So Common in Indian Women.
What No Powder Will Do
- Regrow hair from a dead follicle. Once gone, it is gone.
- Reverse male pattern baldness. Genetic and hormonal; needs medical treatment, and treatment works far better early.
- Work in two weeks. Hair grows 1 cm a month.
- Cover grey. That is henna and indigo, a different job.
See a doctor for round bald patches, a visibly widening parting, or hair coming out in clumps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the single best herb for hair fall?
Bhringraj, if the cause is at the root and the follicles are alive. It will not help breakage or a deficiency.
Powder or oil?
Oily scalp → powder. Dry scalp → oil. Both → oil midweek, powder pack at the weekend. See Bhringraj: Powder vs Oil.
How often should I use a hair pack?
Once a week. More often dries the hair, especially with amla.
How long before I see results?
Scalp comfort 2–4 weeks. Less shedding 6–8 weeks. Visible density 4–6 months.
Can I take these internally too?
Amla and curry leaf, yes — and for greying, eating them probably matters more than applying them. Bhringraj is primarily external.
