Natural Hair Colour: How It Actually Works

Henna alone gives copper-red. That is its only colour. For black you need indigo layered over it, henna day one, indigo day two.

Two timing rules that decide whether it works:

  • Henna paste must rest 4–6 hours before applying, for dye release
  • Indigo paste must be used within 10–15 minutes: it weakens if left standing

And for both: no shampoo for 24 hours after rinsing. The colour keeps oxidising and deepening for a day.

Switching From Bottled Shampoo

Expect less lather and a 2–3 wash adjustment period. Both are normal. Foam comes from sulphates; it is not a measure of cleaning.
