How to Use — The Two-Step Method

Day 1: apply henna, leave 2–3 hours, rinse with plain water. Your hair will look copper — this is expected.

Day 2: mix indigo powder with warm water into a paste. Use it within 10–15 minutes — unlike henna, indigo does not improve with resting and loses strength if left. Apply, leave 45 minutes to 2 hours, rinse with plain water.

Do not shampoo for 24 hours. Indigo continues to oxidise and darken for about a day — washing early is the single most common reason people get a weak result.

A Pinch of Salt Helps

Adding a small pinch of salt to the indigo paste is a traditional trick that helps the colour grip, particularly on resistant grey.

Can I use indigo on its own?

Not for black. Indigo alone on uncoloured hair can give a bluish or uneven tint. The henna base is what makes the black work.

Why must I use the paste immediately?

Indigo's dye releases fast and then degrades. Henna needs hours of rest; indigo needs none. This catches almost everyone out the first time.

Does indigo cause any side effects?

Pure indigo is generally very well tolerated. Problems reported online almost always trace back to adulterated powder containing PPD. Patch test first regardless.

How long does the colour last?

Typically 3–4 weeks, depending on hair porosity and how often you wash.

Does indigo cause grey hair?
