If you live in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia or the Gulf and want genuine Ayurvedic herbs, you have three options: the local Indian grocery store, a large online marketplace, or ordering direct from an Indian farm. Each has real trade-offs, and the right answer depends on what you are buying. This is an honest comparison, including where buying direct is not the best choice.

When Each Option Makes Sense

Buy from your local Indian grocery when...

You need one packet of something today, or you want to try a herb before committing. Buying 100 g from India and paying international shipping on it makes no sense, and we would rather say so.

What to check there: packing date, not just expiry. Powders lose potency long before they become unsafe, and slow-turnover shelves are the main problem with this route.

Buy from a marketplace when...

You want speed and easy returns. The trade-offs: several layers of markup, and sellers you often cannot identify. Counterfeit and mislabelled supplements are a documented problem on large marketplaces.

Buy direct from an Indian farm when...

• You are ordering several items at once, so shipping is spread across the order
• You want to know exactly where it came from
• You want herbs that are genuinely hard to find abroad — harsingar, gokhru, babool phali, tesu flower, kasturi haldi
• You are buying regularly and want consistency between batches

The Freshness Question

This is where the real difference lies, and it is not obvious.

An Ayurvedic powder on a shelf abroad has typically travelled: farm → trader → processor → exporter → importer → distributor → shop. Each step adds months. A packet you buy today may have been ground a year or more ago.

Powders do not become dangerous with age, but they lose potency. Volatile oils evaporate, vitamin C degrades, colour fades. Tulsi, ginger, sandalwood and amla are particularly affected.

How to judge: smell it. Fresh tulsi smells sharply herbal. Fresh ginger is pungent. If a powder smells of almost nothing, it is old regardless of the expiry date.

Customs: What You Should Know

Rules differ by country and do change. General points:

• Dried herbs and powders for personal use are generally permitted in most destinations, in reasonable quantities.
• Seeds may be restricted. Australia and New Zealand in particular have strict biosecurity rules on anything that could germinate. Check before ordering seeds.
• Honey is restricted in some countries. Australia notably restricts honey imports.
• Quantity matters. Personal-use amounts pass more easily than volumes that look commercial.
• Declare accurately. Under-declaring to avoid duty risks seizure.

Check your own country's current rules — US CBP and FDA, UK Border Force, Canada CFIA, Australia DAFF. We cannot guarantee clearance into any country, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise.

What to Check Before Buying Anywhere

1. Single ingredient or blend? "Ayurvedic hair powder" tells you nothing. A named herb tells you what you are getting.
2. Any fillers? Cheap powders are commonly bulked with rice flour or starch.
3. Packing date, not just expiry.
4. Does the seller know where it was grown? If nobody can say, it came through a trading chain.
5. Sensible claims? Anything promising to cure diabetes or cancer is both untrue and illegal to advertise in India. It also tells you what kind of seller you are dealing with.
6. Heavy metals. A real concern with some Ayurvedic products, particularly bhasma preparations, which have caused documented lead poisoning cases. Plain single-herb powders are a much lower risk category than metal-containing formulations — that distinction is worth knowing.
