Triphala vs Rasayan Churna: Which One for Constipation

Triphala, Rasayan Churna and plain haritaki all get recommended for constipation. They work differently and suit different situations. A practical guide to picking one - and to not needing it forever.

Triphala is the gentle daily option and the right starting point. Rasayan Churna is a broader formulation that addresses immunity alongside digestion. Haritaki alone is the strongest and is for short courses when the gentler options are not working. All three are taken at night in warm water. Choosing between them is mostly a question of how stubborn the problem is and whether you want something you can take indefinitely.

Start With Triphala

For most people this is the answer. Triphala is the three-fruit formula — haritaki, amla and baheda — balanced so that no single one dominates.

It is described in Ayurveda as toning the bowel rather than purging it, which is why it is considered safe for indefinite use in a way that a stimulant laxative is not.

Dose: ½–1 teaspoon in warm water at bedtime.

Choose Rasayan Churna If...

Your digestion is sluggish and you feel generally run-down — catching every infection, low energy, poor appetite. Rasayan Churna is formulated as a rejuvenative rather than purely a digestive, so it addresses both.

It is the sensible choice if you would otherwise be taking two separate things.

Rasayan Powder (Churna)

Step Up to Haritaki Only If Needed

If Triphala at a full teaspoon for two weeks is not moving things, haritaki alone is stronger — it contains anthraquinones that stimulate the bowel more directly.

Use it in courses of 2–4 weeks, not indefinitely, then return to Triphala for maintenance.

Why Night, and Why Warm Water

Night: all three take 6–8 hours to act. Taken at bedtime you get a result in the morning. Taken in the morning, it arrives in the middle of your day.

Warm water: helps the powder disperse and supports movement. Cold water works less well.

Fluid matters more than people think. These are fibre-and-tannin heavy. Without enough water through the day, they can make constipation worse rather than better.

The Part That Matters More Than the Powder

An honest article about constipation has to say this: none of these should be a permanent fixture.

The things that actually resolve chronic constipation:

  • Water. Most people with constipation are simply not drinking enough. Before buying anything, try 2–3 litres a day for two weeks.
  • Fibre from food — vegetables, fruit with the skin, whole grains, dal.
  • Movement. A 20-minute walk after dinner does more than most supplements.
  • Not delaying. Repeatedly ignoring the urge trains the bowel to stop signalling.
  • Regular meal times. The gut runs on rhythm.

Use the powder to break the cycle. Use the habits to stay out of it.

When to See a Doctor Instead

Do not treat these at home:

  • Blood in the stool, or black tarry stool
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • A sudden change in bowel habit, especially after 45
  • Severe abdominal pain or vomiting
  • Constipation alternating with diarrhoea over weeks
  • A family history of bowel cancer

These need investigating. Please do not spend six months on herbal powders instead.

Cautions for All Three

  • Pregnancy — avoid, particularly haritaki.
  • Breastfeeding — ask your doctor.
  • Diarrhoea or IBS-D — wrong direction.
  • Diabetes medication — may lower blood sugar; monitor.
  • Other medication — leave a two-hour gap; these can affect absorption.
  • Very weak or dehydrated people — Ayurveda specifically contraindicates haritaki here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take Triphala forever?

Traditionally yes, it is used as a long-term tonic. Even so, work on the habits so you are not dependent on it.

Will these cause dependency?

Triphala is regarded as toning rather than purging and is not considered habit-forming. Any stimulant laxative used daily for months, including haritaki, risks a lazy bowel.

How fast do they work?

6–8 hours. Bedtime for a morning result.

Can I take Triphala and Rasayan Churna together?

There is overlap. Pick one, take it for 4–6 weeks, then reassess.

Is isabgol better?

Isabgol (psyllium) is bulk-forming, very gentle, and safe indefinitely — a reasonable first choice, and it can be combined with Triphala.
