Buy Panchgavya for body and back acne. Buy Haldi Chandan as the everyday family soap. Buy Sandalwood if your skin is sensitive or you run hot in summer. All three are cold-process handmade with their natural glycerine retained, no SLS, no parabens and no synthetic fragrance.
The Decision
| Your skin | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body acne, back acne | Panchgavya | Where feedback is most consistent |
| Everyday, whole family | Haldi Chandan | Turmeric + sandalwood, no staining |
| Sensitive, reactive | Sandalwood | Mildest of the three |
| Prickly heat, summer | Sandalwood | Cooling in the Ayurvedic sense |
| Infants | None — Baby Bath Ubtan | Soap is alkaline; infant skin barrier is still forming |
All three come in 5, 10 and 15 piece packs. Soap does not spoil, so the larger pack is genuinely better value with no freshness downside — unlike the powders.
What Actually Makes Handmade Soap Different
It is not what most people think, so here is the honest version.
Glycerine. Saponification produces soap and glycerine, a natural humectant. Glycerine is commercially valuable, so large manufacturers extract it and sell it on, then add synthetic moisturisers back in. Handmade soap keeps all of it. That is the real difference and the reason it feels less stripping.
On the two ingredients everyone worries about, our position is more measured than the internet's:
- SLS is a genuine skin irritant — dermatology research uses it as a standard irritant. Worth avoiding if your skin is sensitive or dry. It does not cause cancer; that claim has no basis.
- Parabens are preservatives. A hard soap bar contains very little free water and generally does not need them anyway, so this is largely a liquid-product question.
- Synthetic fragrance is arguably the bigger issue than either — it is among the commonest causes of contact dermatitis, and "fragrance" on a label can legally hide dozens of undisclosed compounds.
What to Honestly Expect
So the first bar does not disappoint you:
- Noticeably less lather. Lather is a detergent effect, not a cleaning measurement — but it is what we are all used to.
- The bar softens in standing water. Handmade soap is more water-soluble. A draining soap dish roughly doubles how long it lasts — this is the single biggest factor.
- Colour and scent vary between batches. Natural ingredients do that.
- Real sandalwood is subtle, not overpowering. If a sandalwood soap perfumes the whole bathroom through its wrapper, that is synthetic fragrance. See Sandalwood Soap: Real vs Fragrance.
- It will not clear acne on its own. It is gentler, which helps. It is not a treatment.
About Panchgavya
Panchgavya means five products of the cow — milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung, all processed and then saponified. That list surprises people, so: the ingredients go through a strongly alkaline chemical reaction, and the finished bar is soap.
It has an earthy rather than perfumed smell. Some people like it, some do not — worth knowing before you order 15 pieces.
We will say it is a gentle soap that many people find helps body acne. We will not say it treats any disease; claims of that kind are illegal in India and unsupported. See What Is Panchagavya?
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does one bar last?
3–4 weeks with daily use — considerably longer with a draining dish and if you alternate two bars.
Can I use these on my face?
Yes, though soap of any kind is alkaline and some faces prefer a dedicated cleanser. Sandalwood is the mildest to try first.
Are they good for eczema?
Often gentler, and avoiding SLS and fragrance genuinely helps some people. Not a treatment — see a dermatologist for eczema.
Do they expire?
They do not spoil, but scent fades and natural oils can eventually go rancid. Use within about a year.
Which for hard water?
All handmade soap lathers less in hard water. Sandalwood is the mildest and least drying in that case.
