Why Your Indigo Turned Green (And How to Fix It)

Green usually means one of two things: you judged it too early, or you skipped the henna step. Both are fixable, and one of them fixes itself in 48 hours if you leave it alone.

Before you do anything: wait 48 hours. Indigo looks greenish or dull immediately after rinsing and then oxidises to black over one to two days. A very large share of "my hair went green" is someone judging the result on day one — and then re-dyeing in a panic and ruining a result that was about to be fine.

If it is still green after 48 hours, there are two real causes, and both are fixable.

Cause 1: You Skipped the Henna Step

This is the real one.

Indigo deposits blue. Applied to bare grey or white hair, blue on white gives blue-green. It needs an orange-red base underneath to become black — basic colour theory.

That base is henna. Henna first, indigo second. The order cannot be reversed.

The fix

Apply henna over the green hair — mixed properly, rested 4–6 hours, left on 2–3 hours. The orange counteracts the green and gives you the base you were missing. Then indigo again after a day or two.

It will take one extra session, but it corrects fully. Do not use a chemical colour over it to "fix" it.

Cause 2: Your Indigo Was Dead

Indigo loses its dyeing power fast — within about six months. Old indigo deposits a weak, patchy, greenish tint rather than proper blue.

This catches out people who bought a large pack. A kilo of indigo will be ineffective long before you finish it.

How to tell

Fresh indigo is deep green with a distinct pea-like smell. Old indigo is dull, brownish-green and smells of very little.

Buy indigo in small amounts, more often. This is the one powder where bulk buying is a false economy.

The Three Rules People Break

Indigo works on opposite rules to henna, which is why people who have mastered henna still get indigo wrong.

Henna Indigo
Rest after mixing 4–6 hours Use within 10 minutes
Lemon / acid Helps Kills it
Salt No Yes, ½ tsp — helps it bind
Leave on 2–3 hours 1–2 hours

Never soak indigo overnight. By morning it is dead. This is the mistake people make when they assume indigo behaves like henna.

The Correct Two-Step Method

Step 1 — Henna

Mix, rest 4–6 hours, apply 2–3 hours, rinse with plain water only. Hair will be orange. That is correct.

Wait 24–48 hours (optional but better)

Henna keeps oxidising and gives indigo a better base to bind to.

Step 2 — Indigo

Mix indigo with warm water and ½ tsp salt. No lemon. Apply within 10 minutes. Leave 1–2 hours. Rinse with plain water.

No shampoo for 48 hours, and judge the colour on day three.

Other Indigo Problems

  • Colour faded within a week — you shampooed inside 48 hours, or the indigo was old.
  • Patchy grey still showing — the henna step was too short or applied too thinly. Grey needs more product and more time than the rest of the hair.
  • Still too orange — the indigo step was too short. Repeat just the indigo.
  • Hair feels dry — normal. Oil the next day, or add curd to the henna mix.

If You Want to Avoid the Two-Step Entirely

Nisarg Black Mehndi is pre-blended — fewer steps and fewer ways to get it wrong. The two-step method still gives deeper, longer-lasting black, but the blend is far more forgiving.

Or the Henna Indigo Combo if you want to do it properly with both powders matched.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the green wash out on its own?

Partly, over weeks. Applying henna over it is faster and more reliable.

Can I use chemical colour to fix it?

Not recommended over herbal colour — results are unpredictable. Use henna.

How long does indigo keep?

About six months. Buy small, buy often.

Can I mix henna and indigo in one step?

Yes — roughly 1:1 gives dark brown rather than black. Easier, less black. Two parts henna to one part indigo gives light brown.

Why does it smell like peas?

That is what fresh indigo smells like. If yours smells of nothing, it is old.
