Before choosing a product, answer one question: is your joint pain osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis? Because several herbs sold for joints — alfalfa in particular — are specifically wrong for rheumatoid, and getting this backwards is worse than buying nothing.
Which Do You Have?
| Osteoarthritis | Rheumatoid | |
|---|---|---|
| Morning stiffness | Under 30 minutes | Over an hour |
| Pattern | Often one side | Symmetrical |
| Joints | Knees, hips, spine | Small joints of hands and feet first |
| With rest | Better | Worse |
| Other symptoms | None | Fatigue, low fever, weight loss |
Symmetrical small-joint pain with morning stiffness over an hour and fatigue means see a rheumatologist now. Rheumatoid arthritis destroys joints permanently within the first two years if untreated, and treatment started early has a completely different outcome. No powder changes that.
If It Is Rheumatoid or Any Autoimmune Condition
Do not buy: alfalfa (contains L-canavanine, associated with lupus flares — and it is widely recommended for arthritis, which is exactly the problem), giloy, ashwagandha, spirulina. All stimulate immune activity.
Safe to consider: external oils, dry ginger, parijat. And never stop prescribed DMARDs in favour of herbs.
The Decision, for Osteoarthritis and General Aches
| You want… | Buy |
|---|---|
| Best evidence, taken internally | Dry ginger (sonth) |
| The classic Indian joint herb | Parijat / harsingar |
| Something to rub on the joint | Dardnashi Tel |
| A ready blend | Joint Support Supplement |
| External poultice | Nirgundi leaf powder |
| Convenience, drops | Amrita Bindu |
If You Buy Only One
Dry ginger, if taking something internally. It has the most consistent trial evidence of this group — several knee osteoarthritis studies show modest but real pain reduction. ¼–½ tsp daily in warm water.
Dardnashi Tel, if you want something that works today. External oils act where you put them, avoid drug interactions entirely, and the massage and warmth genuinely help independent of the herb. Relief lasts hours, not permanently — reapply twice daily during a flare.
Being honest: "modest" is the operative word for the internal herbs. None replaces a painkiller in a bad flare.
What Matters More Than Any Powder
For osteoarthritis, in order of actual impact:
- Weight. Each kilogram lost removes roughly four kilograms of load from the knee per step. Nothing on this page comes close.
- Quadriceps strength. Strong thigh muscles take load off the joint — one of the most effective interventions there is.
- Movement. Counterintuitive, but rest makes osteoarthritis worse. Cartilage has no blood supply and is nourished by movement.
- Vitamin D. Deficiency is very common in India and associated with musculoskeletal pain. Get tested.
- Then herbs.
We sell the herbs and they are still fifth on this list.
Cautions
- Ginger and turmeric with blood thinners — both have antiplatelet activity. Stop two weeks before surgery.
- Ginger with gallstones — it stimulates bile flow. Ask your doctor.
- A hot, red, very swollen joint — could be infection or gout. Both urgent. Do not massage it.
- Numb areas from diabetic neuropathy — you cannot judge heat safely; be careful with warming oils.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long before I notice anything?
4–8 weeks for internal anti-inflammatory herbs. External oils give some relief within the hour, but temporarily.
Can these cure arthritis?
No. They may reduce pain and stiffness. Neither type of arthritis is cured by any herb.
Is turmeric milk actually useful?
Better than plain turmeric — curcumin is poorly absorbed without fat and black pepper. Traditional haldi doodh is better designed than a plain capsule.
Can I use these with painkillers?
Generally, but several add to the antiplatelet effect of NSAIDs. Tell your doctor.
