Professional use burns through powder far faster than home use, and the arithmetic surprises people. A single clay facial uses 20–30 g. Ten a week is roughly 1.2 kg a month. A henna application for shoulder-length hair is 100 g, so twenty clients a month is 2 kg of henna alone.
Here is how to work out what you actually need, and which powders will let you down if you over-order.
Consumption Per Service
| Service | Powder used |
|---|---|
| Clay facial (multani mitti) | 20–30 g |
| Ubtan body polish | 60–100 g |
| Henna, shoulder length | 100 g |
| Henna, long hair | 200–250 g |
| Indigo (second step) | Same as the henna used |
| Hair pack (bhringraj/amla blend) | 50–80 g |
| Herbal hair wash | 30–50 g |
Multiply by your weekly bookings, then by four. That is your monthly figure. Order no more than six months of it at a time for leaf powders, twelve for clays.
The Indigo Problem — Read This Before Bulk-Ordering
This is the one that catches professional buyers out, and it is expensive.
Indigo loses its dyeing power within about six months. A salon that buys 5 kg to get a better rate will be using ineffective powder by month eight — and the usual response is to blame the technique, or the client's hair, or the henna.
Fresh indigo is deep green with a distinct pea-like smell. Old indigo is dull brownish-green and smells of very little.
Order indigo in smaller, more frequent lots. It is the one product where bulk buying costs you more than it saves. Henna is more forgiving — about twelve months — but also fades.
What Survives Bulk Storage
| Order large — stable | Order in smaller lots |
|---|---|
| Multani mitti — mineral clay, keeps for years | Indigo — ~6 months |
| Shikakai, reetha | Henna — ~12 months |
| Ubtan | Amla — vitamin C oxidises |
| Kasturi haldi | Aromatic leaf powders |
| Rose petal powder |
Storage in a Working Salon
Salons are humid, and humidity is the one thing that makes powder genuinely unusable rather than merely weaker.
- Decant into a small station jar and keep the bulk sealed elsewhere. Every opening of the main container lets in moisture.
- Never a wet scoop. One damp spoon can spoil a whole sack — mould, and in the worst case aflatoxins.
- Away from the steamer and the wash area.
- Food-grade silica sachets in coastal or monsoon conditions.
- Label with the date received, and use first-in-first-out.
Hard clumps, a musty smell or visible mould means discard it. Do not try to salvage.
Two Things to Tell Your Clients
Both protect you.
Patch test, 48 hours before
Standard for henna and indigo. Also worth doing for neem and kasturi haldi on facial skin.
Never over PPD or metallic-salt henna
If a client has previously used "black henna" that gave instant colour, applying pure henna over it can produce a reaction that damages hair badly. Always ask what they have used before, and strand test.
Genuine black takes two steps and several hours. Anything giving black in 30 minutes is chemical. See the two-step method.
Batch Consistency
Natural produce varies by season in colour and aroma. For a salon this matters more than for a home user — a client who liked last month's result expects the same this month.
Ask before ordering whether your lots will be from the same batch, and order your regular items together rather than piecemeal.
