First Time Buying Ayurvedic Powders? Start Here

Buy one herb, not five. Buy 100 g, not 500 g. Give it eight weeks before deciding anything. Almost everyone who abandons Ayurvedic powders made the same three mistakes on their first order — and the first one is the most expensive.

The Three First-Order Mistakes

1. Buying five things at once

It feels efficient. It is not — because if something works, or something upsets your stomach, you will have no idea which one did it.

One herb. Two weeks. Then add a second if you want.

2. Buying the large pack of something you have never tasted

Neem, karela and giloy are genuinely, seriously bitter. Some people cannot get past it, and no discount fixes an unopened 500 g bag.

Buy 100 g first for anything bitter. Buy larger once you know you will keep taking it.

3. Expecting to feel something in week one

These are not painkillers. Most need 8–12 weeks; hair needs 3–6 months. Nobody feels ashwagandha the way they feel caffeine.

People quit in week two, conclude it does nothing, and they were right — because they never completed the trial.

Where to Start, by What You Want

You want… Start with Taste
General nutrition Moringa Mild, grassy — easiest start
Digestion, regularity Triphala Astringent; take at night
Stress and sleep Ashwagandha Earthy; take at night in milk
Hair The 5-herb blend External — no taste issue
Skin Multani mitti (oily) or ubtan (dry) External
Something you will enjoy Raw honey The easiest thing on the site

If you want the gentlest possible start: moringa or an external hair or face powder. No bitterness, no dosing anxiety, and you find out whether this fits your routine at all.

How to Take It

  1. Start at half the stated dose for the first week — ½ teaspoon, not one.
  2. Warm water is the default carrier. Milk for ashwagandha and shatavari. Buttermilk for bitter herbs.
  3. With food if in doubt. Absorption is slightly better on an empty stomach; sticking with it is much better with food.
  4. Same time every day. Consistency beats precision.
  5. Drink a full glass — these are fibre-heavy.

Timing details: morning or night for each herb.

What Is Normal in the First Fortnight

  • Mild digestive adjustment — bloating with high-fibre powders. Halve the dose, build slowly.
  • More hair in the drain after an oil massage — dislodged hairs that had already released. Settles in two weeks.
  • Nothing at all. This is the most common experience and it is expected.

Not normal — stop and see a doctor: yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, rash or facial swelling, or shakiness and confusion if you take diabetes medication. See Why You Feel Worse After Starting a New Herb.

Tell Your Doctor Before You Start, If

  • You take diabetes medication — many herbs lower blood sugar and stack with it
  • You take blood thinners — several add to them; alfalfa opposes warfarin
  • You take thyroid medication — two-hour gap minimum, and ashwagandha needs a conversation
  • You have an autoimmune condition — giloy, ashwagandha, alfalfa and spirulina are the wrong category
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • You have surgery scheduled — stop two weeks before

A Sensible First Order

Under ₹200: 100 g of moringa. One thing, mild, and you find out whether a daily powder fits your life.

Around ₹500: 100 g moringa + 100 g Triphala + a 250 g jar of honey. Morning nutrition, night digestion, and something you will actually enjoy.

Skincare or hair instead: 500 g multani mitti or the 5-herb hair blend. External, no dosing questions, and results show sooner than internal herbs.

Do not start with: a kilo of anything, five different powders, or a herb you have never tasted in a large pack.

Storing Your First Order

Decant into an airtight glass jar as soon as it arrives — the pouch is for transit, not storage. Cool, dark, away from the stove. Always a dry spoon. Label the date.

Do not refrigerate. The fridge is humid and condensation forms every time you take the jar out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long before I know if it works?

8–12 weeks for internal herbs. 3–6 months for hair. 6–8 weeks for skin.

Can I take more than one?

Eventually, yes — two or three is comfortable. Introduce them two weeks apart.

Do I need a practitioner?

Not for general nutrition or external use. Yes, for anything condition-specific, and yes if you take prescription medication.

Are these regulated?

Food supplements in India come under FSSAI. They are not medicines and are not approved as treatments.

What if I do not like the taste?

Buttermilk for bitter herbs, orange juice for spirulina, honey after rather than mixed in. Or switch — jamun seed is far milder than karela and does a related job.
