Glowing skin is skin that is well hydrated, gently exfoliated, not inflamed, and protected from the sun. That is the whole of it. Ayurvedic ingredients do the first three well. The fourth — sun protection — matters more than every face pack combined, and no traditional ingredient replaces it. This is a routine built around four or five ingredients you will actually keep using, rather than a fifteen-step ritual you will abandon in a fortnight.
First, What "Glow" Actually Is
Worth defining honestly, because the word is used to sell a lot of things.
Skin looks radiant when it:
- Reflects light evenly — requires a smooth surface, which means dead cells removed
- Is hydrated — dehydrated skin looks dull and grey regardless of tone
- Is not inflamed — redness and irritation read as uneven
- Has good circulation
Glow is not the same as being lighter. No herb, clay or oil changes your melanin production. Anything sold on that promise is either useless or contains something it should not — skin-lightening creams sold in India have repeatedly been found to contain mercury and undeclared steroids. Please do not use them.
The Weekly Routine
Daily — two minutes
Morning: rinse with plain lukewarm water, or a gentle cleanser. Moisturise. Sunscreen.
Night: cleanse properly to remove the day. Moisturise.
That is it. Daily is for consistency, not intensity.
Twice a week — the face pack
Pick one according to your skin:
- Oily / acne-prone: multani mitti + rose water. Add ½ tsp neem if breaking out.
- Normal / combination: multani mitti + curd
- Dry: ubtan + honey + milk
- Dull, all types: ½ tsp kasturi haldi + curd
10–15 minutes. Rinse while still slightly tacky — never after it has dried and cracked. A fully dried pack pulls water out of living skin, which is the opposite of what you want. This one detail undoes more face packs than any other.
Once a week — gentle exfoliation
Ubtan is the traditional Indian exfoliant and it is gentler than most scrubs. Make a paste, massage lightly for 30 seconds, rinse.
Light pressure. Scrubbing hard damages the barrier, causes inflammation, and leaves skin duller. If your skin is red afterwards, you scrubbed too hard.
Skip this entirely if you have active acne — scrubbing over inflamed spots spreads bacteria and worsens it.
Daily body — the soap
Commercial soaps are alkaline and strip the skin. A handmade soap retains its natural glycerine.

From the Inside
This part is neglected and it matters more than the topical routine.
- Water. Dehydrated skin looks dull no matter what you put on it.
- Iron. Pallor and dullness are classic signs of anemia. If your skin has looked grey for months, get your haemoglobin and ferritin checked — see Low Hemoglobin.
- Sleep. Skin repairs at night. This is not a cliché; it is why a week of bad sleep shows on your face.
- Gut health. Ayurveda links skin to digestion, and there is something to it. Triphala at night. See How to Improve Gut Health Naturally.
- Vitamin C. Amla — collagen needs it, and it doubles as your iron-absorption helper.
- Less sugar. High sugar intake drives glycation, which stiffens collagen. Real, and slow.
The Thing That Matters Most
Sunscreen.
UV exposure is the largest single cause of dullness, pigmentation, uneven tone, dark spots and premature ageing. In India, where UV levels are high year-round, this is not optional.
A face pack twice a week while getting unprotected sun daily is bailing out a boat with a hole in it.
We do not sell sunscreen. We are telling you this anyway, because it would be dishonest to sell you clay and let you think it substitutes.
Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every morning, reapplied if you are outdoors. Also: hat, shade, sunglasses.
Mistakes That Undo the Routine
- Letting packs dry completely — the commonest one
- Lemon juice on the face — far too acidic, causes irritation and photosensitivity. Very common advice, genuinely bad.
- Cooking turmeric on the face — stains yellow. Use kasturi haldi.
- Over-exfoliating — more than once or twice a week damages the barrier
- Skipping moisturiser because skin is oily — dehydrated skin produces more oil to compensate
- Changing everything weekly — skin turns over in about 28 days. Give any routine 6–8 weeks.
- Not patch testing
A Realistic Timeline
- Week 1: Skin feels cleaner and smoother. Mostly surface exfoliation.
- Weeks 2–4: Texture improves, less congestion.
- Weeks 4–8: One full skin cycle. Genuine improvement in evenness and clarity.
- Months 3+: Post-acne marks fade. This is slow and there is no shortcut.
Pigmentation, melasma and deep scarring need a dermatologist. Months of face packs will not shift them, and delaying real treatment is a cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I use a face pack?
Twice a week for oily skin, once for dry. More is not better.
Can Ayurvedic ingredients lighten skin?
No. They improve clarity, evenness and texture, which makes skin look brighter. Melanin does not change.
Which single ingredient if I only buy one?
Multani mitti for oily skin; ubtan for dry or normal.
Is ubtan good for daily use?
As a gentle cleanser, some people use it daily. As a scrub, once a week.
Do I need a separate night routine?
Cleanse and moisturise. That is enough.
