Sending Gifts to Family in India From Abroad

Ordering within India and shipping domestically avoids customs entirely - which is why sending from an Indian site beats carrying things in a suitcase. What to send parents, and when to order for Diwali.

If you live abroad and want to send something to family in India, ordering from an Indian site and shipping domestically avoids customs entirely. No duty, no clearance delay, no risk of a parcel sitting somewhere for three weeks. It also arrives fresher than anything carried in a suitcase twice a year.

Why This Works Better Than Carrying Things Over

  • No customs. A domestic Indian delivery has none of the complications of an international one.
  • Faster and more predictable — days, not weeks.
  • It arrives on the occasion, not on your next visit in March.
  • Cheaper. No international shipping, no duty, and prices are in rupees.

The one thing you lose is handing it over yourself. A note in the box covers some of that.

What to Send Parents

Situation Send
General, safe choice Nisarg Nature Gift
They will actually eat it Raw honey box
Diwali specifically Abhyanga Snan Kit — for the pre-dawn ritual
Mother, something for herself Nature's Crown
They cook a lot Nutrition Taste hamper or A2 ghee
Parent with diabetes Skincare or soap — see below

If a Parent Has Diabetes or Takes Regular Medication

This comes up constantly with parents, and it is worth getting right from a distance.

  • Honey is not diabetic-friendly. Roughly 76% sugar. "Raw" describes how it was made, not what it does to blood glucose.
  • Blood-sugar herbs interact with diabetes medication. Sent to a parent who does not know that, and who may already be on metformin or a sulfonylurea, they can cause hypoglycaemia.

From another country you cannot supervise this. Send skincare or soap instead — no interaction, no assumption, and nobody reads a soap as a comment on their health.

If you do send supplements, call and say so. See the warning.

When to Order for Diwali

Three to four weeks ahead. Indian courier networks congest badly in the fortnight before the festival because every gifting business ships at once. This is the single most common reason a Diwali gift arrives after Diwali.

If you are ordering for several households — parents, in-laws, a sibling — place it as one order with multiple addresses rather than separately, and have the addresses and pin codes ready. Chasing a pin code in the last week is what makes things late.

Making It Feel Like It Came From You

The gap when you are not there in person is real, and a hamper alone does not close it.

  • Ask for a handwritten-style note to be included, and write something specific — not "Happy Diwali".
  • Call when it arrives. The call is the gift; the box is the excuse.
  • Say what it is for. "This ubtan is for Diwali morning" means something. An unexplained jar of powder does not — many parents receive Ayurvedic products and quietly have no idea what to do with them.

If You Want Something Sent to Yourself Abroad

That is a different calculation — international shipping, duty, and 1–3 weeks in transit. Worth it for things you genuinely cannot get locally; not worth it for turmeric.

Can I send to several addresses?

Ask when ordering — for multiple households, get in touch rather than placing separate orders.

How long does domestic delivery take?

A few days for most Indian addresses. Longer near festivals.
